De geschiedenis van deze Engelse groep gaat terug naar 1976. Gitarist Kimberley Rew en drummer Alex Cooper zijn oprichters van The Waves. Na een paar jaar is de band ter ziele, maar begin jaren tachtig reactiveert Cooper de band door Katrina Leskanich, gezegend met een krachtige soulstem, voor de band te strikken. De groep tekent een platencontract, maar zowel Walking on sunshine (1983) als Katrina and the waves 2 (1984) doen weinig. Aan de Amerikaanse Bangles is het te danken dat de groep alsnog succesvol wordt. De groep The Bangles nemen nl. een coverversie van going down to Liverpool op. EMI neemt Katrina & The Waves onder contract en laten de groep een succesvol album maken met gloednieuwe versies van nummers uit 1983 en 1984. Op dit album Katrina and the Waves (1985) staat de in Amerika en Engeland succesvolle single walking on sunshine, een nummer dat vaak terug te vinden is op de soundtrack van diverse films en regelmatig te horen is in diverse commercials. Met het nummer sun street, afkomstig van het 4e album Waves (1986) scoort de groep opnieuw een hit. De volgende albums, Break of hearts (1989), Pet the tiger (1991), Edge of the land (1993) en Turn around (1995) blijven het karakteristieke geluid - een mix van rock, rhythm & blues - trouw, maar succes blijft uit. In 1997 krijgt de groep een extra injectie dankzij deelname aan en het winnen van het eurovisie songfestival met het nummer love shine a light (4e plaats in NL) en de single walk on water, beiden afkomstig van het album Walk on water (1997), maar het blijkt maar een tijdelijke opleving. Gelijktijdig met het succes op het eurovisie songfestival brengt EMI een verzamelalbum uit met nummers van Katrina and the waves (1985) tot en met Pet the tiger uit 1991. Hierop staan de bekendste nummers, zoals walking on sunshine, going down to Liverpool en sun street.  Een jaar later wordt de groep ontbonden. Katrina Leskanich begint een carrière als DJ en maakt solo het album Katrina Leskanich (2006). In de tv-uitzending Europe shine a light op 16 mei 2020, als vervanging van het eurovisie songfestival dat vanwege de Corona-pandemie is afgelast, zingen alle deelnemers samen love shine a light.
