Phil Collins maakt furore als drummer en (later ook) zanger van de symfonische rockgroep Genesis. Tevens is hij tussen 1976 en 1980 met bevriende studiomuzikanten actief in Brand X. Deze groep laat een synthese van symfonische rock en jazz-rock horen. Na het uiteenvallen van deze groep begint Collins naast zijn werk voor Genesis ook soloplaten te maken. Daarmee weet hij een groot publiek te bereiken, niet in de laatste plaats door het succes van enkele opvallende singles. Waar Genesis moeite heeft met het scoren van hits, slaagt Collins er diverse keren in de hoogste trede van de hitparade te bereiken. Dat gebeurt al met in the air tonight, een nummer afkomstig van zijn debuutalbum Face value uit 1981. Kenmerkend voor dit lied zijn de overdonderende drumslagen van Phil Collins die voelen als een ontlading van ingehouden verdriet en woede. Ook van Hello, i must be going uit 1982 bereikt een nummer de 1e plaats van de hitlijsten, namelijk de cover you can't hurry love. Ook de singles against all odds (van de gelijknamige soundtrack) en het samen met Philip Bailey gezongen easy lover bereiken de top 10. Het laatste nummer is opnieuw een nummer 1 hit. Ook met No jacket required uit 1984 is Collins succesvol. De single sussudio is opnieuw een singlesucces. In 1988 werkt Collins mee aan de film Buster. Op de gelijknamige soundtrack staat het nummer a groovy kind of love. Het is de vierde nummer 1 hit voor Collins. Ook het van dezelfde soundtrack afkomstige two hearts verschijnt in de top 10. Zijn meest succesvolle album lanceert Phil Collins in 1989. Het album draagt als titel But seriously en er worden maar liefst 4 succesvolle singles van dit album gehaald: another day in paradise, i wish it would rain down, something happened on the way to heaven en that's just the way it is. Het album Serious hits live uit 1990 staat evenals But seriously wekenlang in de album top 100. Beide albums bereiken de 1e plaats. Met Both sides uit 1993 en Dance into the light uit 1996 kan Collins het succes van de voorgangers bij lange na niet meer evenaren. Ook de singles van deze twee albums bereiken geen hoge notering meer, met uitzondering van both sides of the story, dat nog wel een top 10 notering in de wacht sleept. Daarna is het tijd voor een eerste verzamelaar, simpelweg Hits genoemd. Deze is uitstekend, aangezien alle hits die niet op albums waren verschenen op deze compilatie een plek hebben gekregen. Zo vinden we op het album het duet met Philip Bailey easy lover, against all odds, de 2 songs van Buster (two hearts en a groovy kind of love) en het duet met Marilyn Martin separate lives dat Collins in 1985 uitbrengt (van de soundtrack white nights). Er staat met true colors ook een nieuw nummer op dit album. Na Dance into the light duurt het 6 jaar voordat Collins in 2002 met het weinig opzienbarende en dromerige Testify op de proppen komt, waarbij het beproefde concept van zijn vorige albums intact is gebleven. Hierop staan de singles can't stop loving you en the least you can do. Collins is in de tussentijd actief als singer/songwriter van de soundtracks Tarzan uit 1999, met het prachtige you'll be in my heart en Brother bear uit 2003. Met Going back uit 2010 stort Collins zich op oude motown-hits.
