Robert Cray Band is de formatie rond bluesmuzikant Robert Cray, een voortreffelijke gitarist en componist met een prachtige soulstem. In 1980 verschijnt het eerste album Who's been talking. Op dit album staan naast eigen songs ook liedjes waar Cray in zijn beginjaren door is geinspireerd. Enige jaren later wordt het opnieuw uitgebracht (1986). De opvolgers Bad influence en False accusations bevestigen dat Cray sterke songs schrijft, een mooie soepele soulstem heeft en prettig in het gehoor liggende soulblues speelt. De groep breekt bij het grote publiek door met het album Strong persuader uit 1986. De vernieuwende blues levert de groep ook enkele hits op, zoals smokin' gun, don’t be afraid of the dark en right next door (because of me). Robert Cray weet in de jaren '86 t/m '95 goede verkoopcijfers te halen met achtereenvolgens Strong persuader, Don't be afraid of the dark, Midnight stroll, I was warned, Shame + a sin en Some rainy moments. Het zijn platen van een hoog niveau. In 1999 komt een goede verzamelaar uit, Heavy picks - the robert cray band collection. Dit album geeft een prima overzicht van zijn loopbaan. Het 11e album Take your shoes off (1999) is een van Cray's meest geslaagde albums. Cray zelf schrijft hierover: "For this record we definitely jumped deeper down into the soul bag." Het 12e album Shoulda be home (2001) is zo live mogelijk opgenomen en daardoor klinkt de plaat heel natuurlijk. Op dit album lijkt Cray terug te keren naar zijn roots, de blues. Met het album Robert Cray & hi rhythm (2017) komt een langgekoesterde wens van Robert Cray uit om een album op te nemen met de legendarische Hi Rhythm-band. Op het album staan voornamelijk covers en slechts 3 nummers van Cray zelf.
