Chris Rea
Chris Rea is de man met de hese stem en het prachtige gitaarspel dat doet denken aan Mark Knopfler van de Dire Straits. Hij heeft in de jaren 70 en 80 een aantal mooie albums en hits afgeleverd, maar na zijn ziekte heeft hij in 2002 een eigen label (Jazzee Blue) opgericht, omdat hij muzikaal onafhankelijk wilde zijn en enkel nog muziek wilde maken die hij zelf mooi vindt en dat is de blues.
Chris Rea wordt in 1951 geboren in Middlesborough. Geïnspireerd door Joe Walsh en Ry Cooder koopt hij een slide-gitaar. Hij debuteert in 1978 met Whatever happened to Benny Santini, dat dankzij de hit fool vooral in Amerika een groot succes wordt. Pas met de single i can hear your heart beat uit 1983 weet Rea dit eerste succes enigszins te benaderen. Zijn 8 platen in de jaren tachtig laten zich het best omschrijven als soft-rock. Met Josephine (van het album Shamrock diaries) heeft hij zijn grootste hit. Op het succesvolle On the beach klinkt Rea tijdelijk meer jazzy dan voorheen, dankzij de samenwerking met Max Middleton. Met The road to hell maakt Rea volgens sommige kenners zijn beste album. In ieder geval bereikt hij daarmee in de UK de 1e plaats. Ook de opvolger Auberge uit 1991 is zeer succesvol. Daarna breekt een periode aan waarin Rea albums blijft maken, maar de kwaliteit wordt steeds minder en de populariteit daalt. Nadat Rea een riskante operatie heeft ondergaan, keert hij terug naar de blues met Stoney road (2002). Dit album is een juweel van een bluesplaat, die heel veel (vooral jaren negentig) werk van Chris Rea in de schaduw stelt. De mooiste nummers zijn changing times, stoney road en dancing the blues away. Ook The blue jukebox (2004) is een prima plaat, waarbij de nadruk ligt op jazzy en - heerlijke lome - bluesy songs. Op dit album komt de gitarist en zanger Rea weer volledig tot zijn recht. Met het live-album the road to hell and back uit 2006 laat Rea nog maar eens merken dat hij compleet gerevitaliseerd is. Op dit album staan veel blues-nummers, maar hij komt ook zijn fans van het eerste uur tegemoet met energieke uitvoeringen van bekende songs, waarbij i can hear your heartbeat dankzij de vele tempowisselingen een geheel nieuwe song lijkt. Rea werkt ook samen met David Knopfler op diens albums Wishbones (2001) en Ship of dreams (2004).
