Mike Batt werd geboren op 6 februari 1950. Hij heeft al heel wat nummers geschreven en gezongen en ook als producer zijn eerste sporen verdiend (zo was hij songwriter/producer van het nummer all around my hat van Steeleye Span uit 1975 en scoorde hij hetzelfde jaar met summertime city zijn enige Britse hit), wanneer hij samen met The London Symphony Orchestra in 1977 zijn eerste georkestreerde soloplaat maakt, nl. Schizophonia. Vanaf dat moment zal componist, zanger en producer Batt steeds met een symphonisch orkest of kamerorkest platen blijven maken. In 1978 schrijft Batt de muziek voor de soundtrack Caravans. In 1979 scoort Art Garfunkel met het door Mike Batt geschreven bright eyes een wereldhit. Het nummer bereikt de 1e plaats in Engeland en Nederland. In hetzelfde jaar haalt ook Mike Batt zelf de Nederlandse hitparade met lady of the dawn, dat te vinden is op zijn beste album Tarot suite. Het is een perfecte combinatie van klassiek getinte stukken en rustige ballads. Op dit album staan ook voortreffelijke bijdragen van Roger Chapman in imbecile en run like the wind. In 1980 probeert Batt met de single the winds of change van het album Waves opnieuw een grote hit te scoren, maar dat lukt niet echt. Ook het album zelf verkoopt beduidend minder goed dan Tarot suite. Met Six days in Berlin (1981), de musical Zero zero (1982), Dragon dance/theme of the dragon (1985) en de musical The hunting of the snark (1986) scoort Batt weinig opvallende platen. Het volgende album Songs of love and war uit 1988 is beter, maar opnieuw worden er weinig exemplaren van verkocht. Daarna schrijft Mike Batt hoofdzakelijk nog de muziek bij soundtracks, met uitzondering van Arabesque (1995) en Philharmania (1998). Op laatstgenoemde album neemt Batt een aantal bekende rocksongs opnieuw op, waarbij ook medewerking wordt verleend door een aantal originele vocalisten. Mike Batt is ook de ontdekker van de Georgisch-britse zangeres Katie Melua, die sterk door blues en jazz is beïnvloed. Haar debuutalbum Call off the search (2004) door hem wordt geproduceerd. Tevens levert hij diverse songs en speelt hij zelf ook mee. De eerste single the closest thing to crazy had Batt eerder zelf gezongen op het album Arabesque uit 1995, waarvan don't trust the angels als single verschijnt. Ook Katie Melua's opvolger Piece by piece (2005) wordt door Batt geproduceerd en hij levert ook ditmaal een grote bijdrage aan het songmateriaal. Van hem is ook de grote hit Nine million bicycles. In 2007 verschijnt haar derde album Pictures. Dit is het laatste album waaraan Mike Batt als songschrijver zijn medewerking verleent. Als eerste single verschijnt if you were a sailboat. De karakteristieke soft pop van de eerste twee albums krijgt op Pictures wat duistere trekjes in nummers als if the lights go out, scary films en ghost town, maar ze passen perfect bij de mysterieus klinkende zangeres. Op de verzamelaar Songwriter’s tale (2008) vertolkt Mike Batt 16 van zijn eigen songs. In hetzelfde jaar komt ook van Katie Melua een compilatiealbum uit: The Katie Melua collection, waarop ook 3 nieuwe songs te vinden zijn en een duet met Eva Cassidy 'what a wonderful world'. Ook is er een dvd toegevoegd van een optreden in Rotterdam in 2008. In 2010 verschijnt The House. Deze plaat is geproduceerd door William Orbit en hij heeft Katie Melua wat meer in de richting van de electropop geduwd. Niet iedereen reageerde enthousiast op deze koerswijziging. In 2012 keert Melua weer terug naar de basis met het album Secret symphony. Er is de hernieuwde samenwerking met Mike Batt. Dit levert weer een aantal brave ballads op. De covers zorgen voor de nodige afwisseling. Het nieuwe is dat ze op dit album vergezeld wordt van een eigen orkest, The Secret Symphony Orchestra. Ketevan uit 2013 is geen vernieuwende, maar wel gevarieerde plaat met wederom Mike Batt als producer. Met In winter (2016) kiest Melua voor een andere weg. Ze wil creatief onafhankelijk zijn en breekt daarom met Mike Batt. Ze raakt gefascineerd door het Georgische Gori Women's Choir en neemt met dit koor bewerkingen op van traditionele kerstliedjes, covers en eigen werk van Melua.
