But seriously is een prachtig en uiterst succesvol album. Er staan prachtige nummers op, waaronder de singles another day in paradise, i wish it would rain down, something happened on the way to heaven en that's just the way it is. Het album klinkt een stuk serieuzer dan de voorganger No jacket required. Diverse songs gaan dan ook over politieke en sociaal-economische items.
