The Proclaimers zijn de tweeling-broers Craig Reid (vocals) en Charlie Reid (vocals, acoustic guitars). Ze komen uit Schotland. Deze tweeling wordt wel eens de jaren tachtig-versie van The Everly Brothers genoemd. Op school speelden ze in enkele punkgroepen, voordat ze in 1983 samen The Proclaimers oprichtten. Ze debuteerden met het sobere album This is the story in 1987. Het nummer letter from America behaalde een derde plaats in de Britse hitlijst. Van het tweede mooie album Sunshine on leith uit 1988 wordt i'm gonna be (500 miles) een hit, evenals i'm on my way, maar dit pas nadat het in de film Shrek werd gebruikt. Het zijn allebei uiterst vrolijke nummers en ze zijn representatief voor heel het oeuvre van de broers, hoewel de broers ook politieke boodschappen in hun songs laten doorklinken. De broers Reid zijn fans van the Hibernian Football Club uit Edinburgh. Hun nummer sunshine on leith wordt bij elke thuiswedstrijd gespeeld. In 1990 maken ze de soundtrack voor de film The crossing. Het nummer king of the road verschijnt als a-kant op een EP en bereikt in Engeland de 9e plaats. In 1993 wordt i'm gonna be (500 miles) in Nederland uitgebracht als nummer van de film Benny & Joon. Het nummer bereikt slechts de tipparade. Pas in 1994 komen de broers met een 3e album, nl. Hit the highway. Hiervan verschijnen de nummers let's get married, what makes you cry en these arms of mine op single. Daarna wordt het geruime tijd stil rond de tweeling. Pas in 2001 verschijnt hun 4e album Persevere, gevolgd door Born innocent (2003) en Restless soul (2005). Deze platen blijven hangen in de anonimiteit. In 2007 staat een nieuwe versie van hun hit  i'm gonna be (500 miles) (featuring Brian Potter & Andy Pipkin) opnieuw in de Britse hitlijsten en behaalt zelfs de eerste plaats. De tekst walk 500 miles is hierbij gewijzigd in roll 500 miles. Met Life with you (2007) leveren de broers een goede plaat af die ook goed verkoopt in Engeland.
