Steve Winwood is een Britse popmuzikant die op zijn vijftiende lid wordt van de Spencer Davis Group. In 1967 richt hij de band Traffic op. In 1968 besluiten Winwood en Eric Clapton om een nieuw project onder de naam Blind Faith te starten. Deze band bestaat maar kort en in 1970 komt Traffic weer bij elkaar, maar in 1974 valt het doek definitief voor de band. Winwood begint in 1976 met de opnamen van zijn eerste solo-album, die in 1977 onder de naam Steve Winwood wordt uitgebracht. Zijn handelsmerk is een prachtige bluesy stem en veel van zijn composities zijn fraai. In 1980 volgt het alom gewaardeerde Arc of a diver. Op dit album bespeelt Winwood alle instrumenten zelf. Het levert hem enkele hits op, waaronder het prachtige while you see a chance. Op Talking back to the night uit 1982 zijn alle teksten geschreven door tekstdichter Will Jennings. Ook nu weer worden enkele nummers single-successen, waaronder still in the game. In hetzelfde jaar componeert hij voor de soundtrack van They call it an accident het nummer your silence is your song. Met Back in the high life (1986) heeft Winwood veel succes. Singles als higher love, freedom overspill en back in the high life again worden in meerdere landen hits. In de Verenigde Staten haalt higher love zelfs de eerste plaats. In 1988 volgt Roll with it. Het is een van de betere albums van Winwood en verschillende nummers worden als single uitgebracht, waaronder roll with it,  don't you know what the night can do? en holding on. Zowel album als de single roll with it komen in Amerika op 1. In 1990 verschijnt Refugees of the heart. Dit album maakt minder indruk, maar er staan opnieuw fraaie enkele fraaie nummers op, waaronder de singles one and only man en i will be here. Pas 7 jaar later verschijnt Junction seven. About time (2003) is de minste solo-plaat van Winwood en in 2008 revancheert hij zich met Nine lives. In 1998 verlenen Steve Winwood en Eric Clapton als 'guest performers' hun medewerking aan de film Blues Brothers 2000, het vervolg op The Blues Brothers uit 1980.
