Tears for fears bestaat aanvankelijk uit Roland Orzabal en Curt Smith. Wanneer het tweetal een demo opneemt van het nummer suffer the children, krijgt het duo een platencontract. Met de 4e single change, afkomstig van het debuutalbum The hurting (1983), vestigt de groep haar naam in Europa. De groep maakt complexe muziek, waarbij de synthesizer dominant aanwezig is. Zeer succesvol is Tears for fears met hun 2e album The big chair uit 1985. Maar liefst 5 singles worden van dit album gehaald en sommige songs (shout en everybody wants to rule the world) zijn grote hits. The seeds of love uit 1989 is een prima album, waarop Roland Orzabal en Curt Smith voorlopig voor het laatst samen zijn te horen. Op deze plaat horen we Oleta Adams als zangeres op de nummers woman in chains en badman's song. Een prachtig nummer is advice for the young at heart. Meest succesvolle single is echter sowing the seeds of love. Dit nummer bereikte de 3e plaats. Nadat het 3e album The seeds of love in 1989 is uitgebracht, valt het duo Orzabal en Smith uiteen en gaat Roland Orzabal alleen verder onder de naam Tears for fears. Hij blijft redelijke muziek maken, maar de verkoop van zijn albums Elemental (1993) en Raoul and the kings of spain (1995) en de daarbij uitgebrachte singles valt tegen. In 2004 komt het tot een reunie met Curt Smith en wordt Everybody loves a happy ending uitgebracht. Daarna is het 18 jaar wachten op een nieuw album met als titel The tipping point (2022). Dit album is uiterst succesvol, zowel in Europa als de US.
